This date is estimated. Actual date set in the second quarter of the year. The American Music Awards were created by Dick Clark in 1973 as an event that could replace the Grammy Awards when the contract of the latter expired.
The American Music Awards rely on the vote of the public rather then professional trade members.
By airing in the fall rather than during the first quarter, the American Music Awards have enjoyed immense success, in part because it does not compete with other major award shows.
